Matteo Ruggeri joined Aston Villa from Atlético Madrid in August 2026. The Italian arrived in the Midlands following one season at the La Liga side, making 47 appearances across domestic and European competitions. 

Nicknamed ‘Il Tigre’ for his aggressive style of play, the Italian came through the ranks at Atalanta in his home region of Bergamo. He played a key role as the club won the UEFA Europa League in 2024, later being named in the Team of the Tournament. 

On the international scene, Ruggeri received his first call-up to the senior squad for a round of Nations League fixtures in 2025, having featured for the national team at several age groups.
