Tyrone Mings beamed with pride after helping Aston Villa keep a clean sheet in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Newcastle United.
The Villans were made to defend astutely in the closing stages to protect their one-goal advantage, after Johan Manzambi had broken the deadlock in the opening period.
And the defender spoke encouragingly about how he and his teammates continue to adapt and improve as the season progresses.
“It feels like a really big win,” Mings said.
“Super proud of everything that we’ve put into the season so far.
“It feels at times like we’ve had a lot of changes, but the manager is keen to reiterate that we have a ‘no excuse’ culture.
“We have enough players here that have experienced St. James’ Park before, have experienced the league before, and we’ve added some fantastic players.”
Being forced to play the final 14 minutes at left-back after Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s withdrawal, Mings believes his adaptability and commitment to the cause provides a poignant representation of the wide cause.
“Coming here is always going to be difficult, of course,” he added.
“I’m super proud to come here and keep a clean sheet. I even rolled back the years to 2015/16 and played left-back for 10-15 minutes!
“I think that shows what’s going on at the club at the moment. Everybody’s putting in a shift – the players that played on Wednesday and went again today – everybody can be super proud of today’s result.”
