Interim head coach Brian Sørensen was pleased with Aston Villa's performance as they secured their second win in as many Subway Players Cup outings on Wednesday, beating Newcastle United 3-1.

The Villans took the lead in the 10th minute when Lily Murphy turned home her first goal for the club, before Lucia Kendall scored twice off the bench in the second half to ensure a comfortable victory at Keys Park.

And Sørensen was pleased with how his players applied the side's front-footed, attacking gameplan relentlessly from first whistle to last.

Speaking post-match to VillaTV, Sørensen said: "I thought it was really good from minute one to 94.

"We looked in control, we looked front-footed, playing forward, everything that we've been talking about, we tried to put in place.

"It looked good, so I'm really happy for the girls."

The Dane stressed the importance of continuing positive momentum in the competition, as Villa followed up on their opening night win at Nottingham Forest by collecting another three points at Keys Park.

"(It's) super important. Because of the format this year, I think it's one of those ones where we potentially could try to get something.

"Of course we will aim at getting as high as we can in that (League Phase) table, so we are in the games after Christmas."

It was a positive display all round for Villa, with Murphy and Kendall both getting on the scoresheet for the first time this season.

Academy graduate Georgia Mullett providing her first goal contribution of the campaign with a sublime backheeled assist.

"I thought she was brilliant", said Sorensen when asked to describe youngster Murphy's performance.

"(She made) lots of dangerous runs down that right side and she could probably have had a couple more (goals)with the chances she created.

"It's good for her. A young player, she needs confidence and so on, and we're trying to give her that, so I'm really happy for her that she got the goal."

The home fans provided another great atmosphere under the lights for our first competitive outing in Hednesford, and Sørensen finished up by thanking them for their continued support.

"I really enjoyed playing at Keys Park, I think it's a fantastic stadium and atmosphere and the fans just make it even better.

"I hope they come and support us on Sunday, we're going to need that back in the WSL, and hopefully we made them a little bit proud today."
